Communities in the Tropic of Capricorn region face common challenges related to climate, environment, socio-economic conditions, culture and technology access. Issues include housing shortages, food and water insecurity, and coastal and energy vulnerabilities.
The conditions faced by these vulnerable populations are exacerbated by the effects of climate change.
The Tropic of Capricorn (latitude 23.5° South) marks the southern boundary of the tropics (see Figure 1). Countries and communities in the region north and south of the Tropic of Capricorn include the Pacific Islands, South America, the southern part of Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Many countries here are part of the Global South, often affected by colonisation and distant from major economies, with limited awareness of shared issues.
